TOURISM INDUSTRY FROM THE STATISTICAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

To define tourism from the statistical perspective is an accepted method. Based the statistical perspective, this paper widely explains some basic conceptions of tourism and their advantages and disadvantages. Some experts may think that to define tourism from the statistical perspective may improperly widen tourism industry and this definition can be different from the general idea held by the public who do not undertake tourism research. The paper studies the existing Chinese tourism statistical method by going through its basic instance, major characteristics, facing difficulties, tourism satellite accountant and the development of China's tourism statistics. The author thinks that China's tourism statistics includes three major characteristics which are tourism statistics being able to gain support from all levels of statistics department, tourism statistical ranges relatively being extensive, spot check being commonly used in tourism statistics. The paper also enumerates three major difficulties which China's tourism statistics is facing now. It is hard to grasp tourism definition in practical tourism investigation. It is inevitably that the spot checks bring error by themselves. At present, China's tourism statistics cannot reflect the tourism's share in the national economy. The author thinks that the existing Chinese tourism statistical method should be optimized so that more exact data of tourism demand can be included, and to build Chinese own TSA makes it possible to measure tourism's share in the GDP, by linking the data of tourism demand and supply. Also, the author thinks that tourism statistics should meet the needs of social and economic development. At the end of this paper, the author rectifies some improper views in the present tourism research. For example, the author points out that the expenditure approach used in National Account is not applicable to calculate the value added of tourism industry.
