Abstract In all the research results concerning urban human settlement, few have mentioned the production environment and still fewer have made thorough investigations on it. Based on a thorough review of the concept of human settlement, the authors point out that production environment is an indispensable part of human settlement, and that production environment in urban human settlement means both the urban environment created by production activities and the environment in which people conduct production activities. Accordingly, the authors discusse the compositional elements of production environment, dividing it into two parts: interior and exterior production environment.
The interior production environment, directly around working people, is closely related with people's mental and physical health. However, the interior production environment is seldom studied by researchers in the field of human settlement. This ignorance has caused flawed appraisal in urban human settlement as there are few indexes to appraise this important environment in people's daily life.
The exterior production environment is the one outside production site but deeply influenced by production activities. It is divided into production infrastructure environment, production population environment, production cultural and institutional environment, production pollution and disaster environment, employment environment, etc. Production infrastructure environment is the one created or deeply affected by all the infrastructures for production purpose. With the increase of the production scale, production infrastructure environment is becoming more and more important in people's daily life and more attention should be paid to the relationship between production infrastructure and human settlement. By gathering together large number of people with different age, sex, cultural and educational background, etc., have modern mass production activities created a unique production population environment. The development of production techniques and inward investment has tremendously changed the long term traditions and created a totally different production cultural and institutional environment, and thus it needs to be thoroughly studied. Production pollution and disaster environment has been paid enough attention to by both the public and professionals while the employment one, has seldom been paid any attention to.
It is concluded that, as the deficiency of attention paid to the investigation of production environment has caused many defects in human settlement construction and appraisal, the sustainable development of urban human settlement requires more work on production environment.
