Abstract  Star-rated hotels are the main parts of Chinese accommodations, and formed a social brand. To some extent, high star-rated hotels present a city's tourism image. It is great significant to study the efficiency and spatial gathering trend of star-rated hotels for the development of Chinese hotels industry and tourism industry. By selecting panel dates of Chinese mainland's 31 provinces from 2000 to 2009,based on an improved DEA model, this article calculating the relative efficiency of provincial star-rated hotels, and analysis the spatial gathering trend and the impact mechanism of relative efficiency. The results shows that:1) The change of star-rated hotels' relative efficiency in mainland is determined by scale efficiency. The scale efficiency of most provinces is decreasing. 2) Because of the history and reality factors, the spatial autocorrelation of provincial star-rated hotels' relative efficiency have a negative correlation with the level of economic development. 3) Different efficiency has different impact mechanism, the total efficiency and scale efficiency has a negative correlation with GDP,GDP of tertiary and secondary industry, international tourism revenues, domestic tourism revenues, the number of travel agent, the number of star-rated hotels and the staff engaged in tourism; the pure technical efficiency has a strong correlation with GDP of tertiary, international tourism revenues, domestic tourism revenues, the number of star-rated hotels and the staff engaged in tourism. The location factor has not significant correlation with the relative efficiency. 4) Based on the Boston Matrix Method, finally this article proposed some suggests that can improve the star-rated hotels' relative efficiency in Chinese mainland.
