Abstract With the deepening of globalization and the strengthening of regional economic integration, metropolitan area has become an key research content of economic geography and regional economics. The metropolitan construction promotes harmonious and linkage development, which is conducive to the metropolitan integrated development. The spatial Interaction study is one of the most important parts in metropolitan area study. This paper calculates and analyzes the spatio-temporal evolvement of spatial interaction among counties of Nanjing metropolitan area by using the improved gravity model, improved potential model and GIS spatial analysis method. And on this basis' problems and countermeasures during the metropolitan development are discussed. Some conclusions can be draw as follows: 1) Spatial relation of cities and counties is growing in Nanjing metropolitan area, the linkage between Nanjing main city and other counties and cities are the strongest. 2) The evolution of spatial relation in Nanjing metropolitan area reflects the space reconstruction of metropolitan's internal space form which is radial structure taking Nanjing as the center in 2000 and there is a high strength contact network among cities and counties in Nanjing, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou, Maanshan in 2013. 3) The potential value of the Nanjing's main city is in the first place during the study period. 4) There is a layer structure of potential values taking Nanjing as the center.
