SPATIAL EVOLUTION OF HOME TO COMMERCIAL HOME IN THE PERIPHERAL AREAS IN CITIES: A CASE STUDY OF JINGHONG CITY IN XISHUANGBANNA |

Abstract This paper aims to advance the theoretical studies of the spatial evolution of home to commercial home in the peripheral areas in cities by two case studies in Manjingfa and Mannongfeng, two villages located in Jinghong city, Xishuangbanna Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Adopting a qualitative research approach, the authors interviewed the key stakeholders involved in the minority tourism development of the two villages, such as the village leaders, enterprise staff, villagers, and tourists, as well as performed participatory observation by staying and living together with local villagers within the Daijiale (a local form of homestay of the Dai minority style), to collect data for the study. The authors analyzed the interactions between different stakeholders to discuss how clear the interior borders are between tourists and home owners/operators within the commercial homes in Xishuangbanna and how are they redefined, as well as to explore the spatial structure and nature of such commercial homes. It is found that, the commercial homes in peripheral areas in cities have had relatively strict borders separating the space for tourists and those for the home owners/operators since the very beginning of their operations, and these borders are getting more strictly controlled. Reasons for such a situation of executing stricter borders are threefold, namely the conflicts between the religious beliefs of local villagers (Tibetan Buddhism) and the disorderly behaviors of tourists, different participation patterns in tourism of local residents, and the influences of modernization.
