Abstract Improving farmers' well-being is the ultimate goal of rural revitalization and one of the key issues for sustainable rural development. Community environmental characteristics and individual socioeconomic characteristics are the main sources of influencing farmers' subjective well-being. Taking Luochuan county of Shaanxi province in the Loess Gully Region as a study area, the farmers' subjective well-being was evaluated from the cognitive dimension and emotional dimension, which is very important to improve the scientificity of the research on farmers' subjective well-being. At the same time, the impact of the communities' natural environment, social environment, and built environment on residents' subjective well-being was explored based on the multi-level model. Finally, the way to improve the subjective well-being of residents in the study area was proposed based on the combination of top-down and bottom-up perspectives. The results were as follows: 1) the mean value of farmers' subjective well-being was 0.512, and age, income level and health status were significantly positively correlated with farmers' subjective well-being. 2) The communities' environment contributed 18.57 % of the variation in subjective well-being. 3) There are two main ways to improve the subjective well-being of local residents.
