Abstract:As a key element of urban spatial structure, the spatial distribution of urban employment is also an important topic of urban spatial structure research and many scholars have done a lot of researches on it. But most of those studies divide research unit in accordance with the administrative divisions. But it is usually difficult to obtain these detailed employment date of those administrative divisions. So it is really necessary to think another way to divide the research unit. Meanwhile, most scholars focus only on the employment date, ignoring the date of land use. Since human activity is always based on the construction land, especially the employment activity. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on the relationship between the employment date and the date of land use. With the reference to those existing methods, this paper tries to divide research unit according to the plot method of the traffic zone division, based on the existing administrative divisions. The paper also tries to calculate the sub-industry employment date and the corresponding employment density of each research unit by matching the employment date and the date of land use. And then this paper makes an empirical study for spatial distribution of urban employment in Nanjing by using these new methods. Nanjing has made a rapid social-economic development, and the spatial distribution of urban employment is also changed. In this paper, the study firstly divides Nanjing into 159 research units on the basis of the existing 11 districts in Nanjing, and calculate manufacturing, service trade, business and finance, and the total employment density of each research unit according to the date of "district level" sub-industry employment in the sampling investigation of 1% population of Nanjing in 2005 and the land use map in Nanjing in 2006. Secondly, the study analyzes the characteristics and mechanism of manufacturing, service industry and the total employment spatial layout in Nanjing by using Arcgis analyses. The results demonstrate that the spatial distribution of manufacturing employment, service trade business and finance employment, and the total employment show clear characteristics; the development ideas, planning guidance, market power, history and other factors are the main mechanism affecting the spatial distribution of employment.
