Abstract:Taking "Xizi" poems of Hangzhou West Lake as an example, this paper makes an initial discussion on the basic meanings, supporting theories and research values of the concept of the tourist semiotic practice.The concept holds the idea that tourists are not passive acceptors of their memories of signs, but applying them into the practices of tourism for ascertain of the authenticity of the markers, cultural discovering, and re-creation of semiotic signs with their own embodied practices. Semiotics, practice theories, and (body) phenomenology constitute the basic supporting theories of the concept. Semiotic practices of tourists are the intermediate links between the subjectivity and the objectivity, the past and the present, the known and the possible, the representamen and the object, we and others, and thus has special empirical research values. An indepth study of the tourist semiotic practice helps excavating inner cultural demands of tourists, guiding their symbolic behavior, improving cultural qualities of citizens, and advocating new patterns of civilized travels.Semiotic practices of tourists include taking photos, drawing pictures, personal cultural interpretations, role imitations, improvisational performances, emotional expression, and personal interactions, etc. A comparative study of different forms of the tourist semiotic practice contributes to a better understand of the contents and characteristics of the concept. The contents of the concept of the tourist semiotic practice include activities and significances, identities and relationships, actors and strategies, and symbols and relationships, etc.The characteristics of the concept range from experiential, behavioral, emotional, to tempo-spatial aspects.
