Abstract The ancient village is a special kind of tourism destination, and its development pattern takes on its own characteristics. Taking the ancient village in Yixian County, Anhui Province as an example, this paper puts forward some new perspectives for the development and preservation of the cultural heritages. It also puts much emphasis on the fact that the development of the ancient villages should abide by the guideline of sustainable development and that the development of this industry should play a major part in the preservation of ancient villages. Therefore, the concept of historic protection of these villages should be approached seriously during the process of development. The tourism development of these places can be one of the best means to help improve the living standard of local people. The paper firstly comments on the tourism resources in the ancient villages in Yixian County since they draw us a vivid picture for the essence of the Huizhou culture sufficiently. On the grounds of the sustainable tourism, this paper puts forward four principles for the development of the ancient villages. First, the development policy must be selective and it shouldn't be tackled with at random. The local government should make a general plan for the development of sustainable tourism. Second, the authenticity of the ancient villages must be well protected. Third, during the development, we must lend an ear to the local citizens' feelings and thoughts, and make efforts to improve their living environment and living standard. Last, the tourism products should be designed to best show the essence of Huizhou Culture. At the same time, the cultural tourism products must be understandable and impressive. Based on the tourism resources and the tourism market, this paper proposes the orientation of the tourism development for the ancient villages in Yixian County.
