A STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL CAPITAL ON THE GROWTH OF SMALL TOURISM ENTERPRISES IN THE CONTEXT OF EMERGENCIES: TAKING THE WORLD HERITAGE SITE HONGCUN AS AN EXAMPLE |

Abstract This study adopts Hongcun, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as an empirical case to explore the role of social capital in shaping small tourism enterprises' development during and after emergencies through semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation methods. It investigates the impact of social capital on the development of small tourism enterprises during emergencies. Small tourism enterprises leverage social capital, both individual and collective, to drive growth. Individual social capital enhances small tourism enterprises' resilience and operational performance during crises through three dimensions: market networks, personal resources, and vertical connections. Collective social capital impacts the growth and innovation of small tourism enterprises through two sub-dimensions: community cooperation network and community public resources. Social capital through the strength and breadth of networks shapes small tourism enterprises' growth during and after crises. Individual and collective social capital undergo bidirectional transformation: the former converges into the latter via network externality, while the latter feeds back into the former through network connections. The interplay of factors shapes small tourism enterprises' growth trajectories. This study offers theoretical and practical insights into fostering their high-quality development postcrisis.
