Abstract:With the rapid development of economy and urbanization in China, people build a few satellite cities and new towns outside the metropolis to take relief of the excessive urban functions from the city center. However, urban functions are still concentrated in the city center, because these satellite cities and new towns are not perfect in infrastructure and public services, which make them less attraction to people. Besides that, a satellite city or a new town without industrial function often become "a bedroom community", which cause the spatial separation between workplaces and residences and this separation between housing and employment will lead to traffic jam and environment pollution. Therefore, it is important to review the research of urban function decentralization. This paper reviewed the related research progress on urban function decentralization from measurement methods, decentralization approach and the effect of urban function decentralization. First, the research summarized the measurement methods of population decentralization and industrial decentralization respectively. Then we analyzed the necessity and mechanism of urban function decentralization briefly. Also, we reviewed the research at home and broad of their experience of urban function decentralization. Cities mainly decentralize their population and industry through the way of suburbanization or building new towns. In addition, we evaluated the effect of urban function decentralization of different cities. Finally, we compared the research contents and research methods of the studies at home and abroad. In general, foreign research is relatively mature and has formed a perfect theory basis and method system.
