AN EXPLORATION OF SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES OF URBAN AGGLOMERATION IN CHINA

Abstract：Globalization is a distinct characteristic of contemporary society. With the global economic integration, the comprehensive spatial and temporal changes have appeared in the development of urban agglomeration which is of regional significance. The world is affected by accelerating, widening and deepening processes of globalization, so the nation is no longer the only entity that affects people's life and thoughts. Cities are not isolated or close systems. Cooperation and competition as well as development and constraint coexist in urban agglomeration. Since the late 1970s urban agglomerates in regions in China such as Pearl Rover Delta Region have developed rapidly and comprehensively, and those in other regions such as the Sichuan Basin have also gradually become centralized. Small towns and villages begin to re-structure themselves into small, medium or large cities. Globalization and modernization make urbanization accelerate. Information network, industrial cluster and the major infrastructure integration become the important parts of "human economic activities", "cultural and technological exchanges", and "the people's life". They also become impetus and mechanisms which can improve the urban agglomerations. Since the early 1980s, a number of economists and geographers have advocated coordinate development of large, medium and small cities and sustainable development. The government aims to establish a harmonious society and apply the scientific outlook on development which is the major development strategies and construction goals of urban agglomeration as well as the major action to speed up the urbanization and modernization. Therefore, the authors conduct this research comprehensively and systematically on the development strategies and construction goals of the urban agglomeration.
