Abstract:Since 1990, great improvement in information technology has made urban and regional spatial structure undergo swift transformation. Based on the review of classical analysis of spatial components, the paper discusses the changes of nodes, lines and surface of regional spatial structure from its spatial form and internal substance.
Closed node system has been naked to the new international and national environment, which is transforming the function of these nodes. Information and knowledge also redefine urban size and its importance. Their position in region also changes with the transformation. Growth of urban space has showed a polycentric structure. The node system is in a polarizing process. Connection between main nodes becomes more and more strong. The component of lines also has some new changes, and network is becoming more and more important. New information technology induces the development of telecommunication, and creates a new electronic space. Information flow becomes most important factors of social economic system. Role of internet in regional structure can not be ignored. Application of information technology into the management and operation of physical network strengthens their practice, and makes factors mobility and fluidity become reinforced. The organization of these different networks become flexible, which leads to strong interaction of space unit. With the rapid development of information technology, space of flow emerge and begin to reshape the regional structure. This new change induce new spatial development mode, from information cities, global cities to smart regions or intelligent corridors. These new spatial combinations reflect the role of information and innovation to region. Traditional interaction of core and periphery is destroyed. New spatial relationship is being setup.
Finally, with the information and knowledge penetration through social-economic system, point, line and surface are being redefined. However, the paper argues that the evolution of spatial structure is connected with particular regional social-economic context.
