Abstract:This paper focuses on the development of Chinese metropolises in transition. The attention is initially paid to the characteristics of metropolitan development since the late 1970s,in the aspects of the temporal and spatial change,industrial restructuring,spatial diffusion, land use change-the phenomenon of metropolitanization has become obvious although it has being slightly weakened since 1990s;the degree of spatial cluster of metropolises has increased;the tertiary sector has being become the leading industry in metropolitan economic structure;the producer services has seen a more rapid development speed than other services;the suburbanization is getting clear;the corridor effect of spatial expansion of metropolises is easily identified although the concentric expansion is the major way;the spatial substitution of urban function zones has occurred;the traditional CBD is experiencing the function upgrade and morphological change,and new CBD is forming,the establishment of high-tech parks has promoted the change of land use;the spatial distribution of urban residents with different income levels has changed.
Then the new factors of affecting the metropolitan development are identified,such as information network,culture,innovation environment,sustainable human settlements and migrant labors. Thirdly,the problems faced by Chinese metropolises in future development are discussed,including the core-periphery contrast and regional integration;the upgrading of industrial structure of metropolises;the population quality;the social justice;the sustainable development;and the urban planning and land use.
