Abstract:The social classes are divided more and more in China, along with the deep transformation of urban social and economic development and spatial reconstruction, which make the middle class rise rapidly. The middle class influencing increasingly urban space, social structure and urbanization has played an important role in urban economic development and social stability. The spatial-temporal study of middle class residents is scarce. This paper mainly discusses the characteristics of time allocation, spatial distribution and mobility of middle class daily activities, using the time geography method, on the basis of the questionnaire survey on the working and weekend day activity dairies of 881 middle classes in the 36 middle class neighborhoods. The results indicate that the activity pattern of middle class show the trend of clear rhythm on the working day while the time-use percentages of work and leisure are higher, as well as the middle class with different socioeconomic and environmental attributes has distinction in the time allocation of daily activity; in addition, most of their non-work activities are located within 3-km distance from their home, and the core business district is the most concentrated region of the spatial distribution of their activities; meanwhile, they have more multi-purpose and less trips, and frequently use the private car and walk in their daily life; besides, they have much larger observed activity space measured by convex polygon, and stronger activity space mobility. On the whole, the spatial-temporal characteristics of middle class residents with higher social status and wealth are obviously different from the low-and middle-income residents.
