ON THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF THE SETTLEMENT OF THE UNIQUE ETHNIC GROUPS IN ZANG AND YI CORRIDOR——A Case Study of Baima people

Abstract:Baima people is a small but a unique ethnic group, of which population is only about 20,000. The settlement of Baima people located on the borderline between Sichuang and Gansu province is a relatively unattached community of cultural geography. This ethnic neighborhood is one of the human inhabitancy zones of Yangtze valley at higher elevation. This zone is also one of the representative regions, which preserved a great bio-cultural diversity in the west of China. The contemporary ethnic neighborhood of Baima people just was the umbilicus settlement area of the Di people in Han dynasty before about 2000 years. A Di person was one of the 5 important different nationalities in north China of that time. The geographic category of Baima ethnic settlement implies the agricultural landscape established on the small alluvial fans and the vale Champaign. Almost all the balconies of the houses in the Baima villages look on the place where appear the risen sun.The composition of the agrestic civil architecture in the Baima villages racily incarnates the aboriginal religious devotion to the manito and naturism. Generally the beliefs of Baima People are natural religious beliefs based on believing that everything has spirit and which was the common form of the remote antiquity people's religious beliefs. On the basis of a case study in some Baima villages in Sichuan province, this paper expounded the regional features of the culture-landscapes such as the perfect harmony between the villages and natural environment,the agrestic the civil construction in the village of Baima people, and so on.
