Abstract:The numbers of inbound tourists and international tourism exchange revenue in Guangdong Province have reached the topmost in China since 1978. There are numerous inbound tourists moving into the hinterland from Guangdong. The westward diffusion of inbound tourist flow (ITF) from Guangdong epitomizes the movement of ITF in China. The various time-space rules play a significant role in deeply understanding the movement characteristics, patterns and mechanisms of ITF in China. The paper quantitatively depicts and analyzes the features of dynamic development of the westward diffusion of ITF from Guangdong by calculating the transferring state of diffusion, the time-space distribution concentration index, and the transferring density index. With the help of Excel and SPSS software, these indexes are calculated by using the database from 1998 to 2006 issued by CNTA. The conclusion indicates that Guangdong is one of the cores of ITF diffusion circle, and West China has become the hypo-important diffusion destination of Guangdong's ITF since 2000. However, it shows a decreasing trend that the farther distance between the entering sites and major destination areas is, the smaller the transferring number of inbound tourists will be. The time distribution concentration index fluctuated at 15 during the past 8 years in the west except Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, meaning there are few variations between years that happened in Guangdong ITF westward diffusion. Furthermore, the spatial distribution concentration index decreases and maintains at 2.5 in the new century while it increased greatly at the end of last century, showing that the distribution of the diffusion destination is stably centralized in a few certain provinces. Also, the destinations of Guangdong ITF are inclined to the areas with rich tourism resources. Therefore, the transferring density of inbound tourists in these areas is relatively high. Besides, the density index of each province is directly relevant to largeness of these areas.
