Abstract：Nowadays, the shaping of region image has been paid much attention to. The symbolic image has a key role in attracting public attention, highlighting the city spirit and style, enhancing city fame and reputation, which could leave people a comprehensive impression on an unfamiliar city. A symbolic building and landscape image should be identified clearly and easily. Essential elements affecting the composition of region symbolic image must include regional culture characteristics, creation of landscape image, spatial arrangement, eco-background, and so on. Taking Lanzhou City as a case, the paper discusses the integrated development of material symbolic image in a region, and argues that the region symbolic image is featured with the uniqueness, symbolism, and historical inheritance. Lanzhou has come into being with its unique image and style of the natural geographical environment, deep historical and cultural details, which can be integrated as region symbolic images according to its significantly regional advantages. However, the developement of the symbols of Lanzhou is relatively backward and unbalanced, and the symbols' landscape image does not have its distinctive characteristics of the region. Based on the above, the paper puts forward some suggestions as follows:the integrating of the region symbolic image in Lanzhou; building of the symbols embodying the city development under the region background; configuration of the symbols playing a key role in image propaganda on the important location; the transformation of Yellow River Custom Tourist Line into an overall symbolic image; and molding of landscape image of the symbols presenting the sustainable and harmonious relationship between human and eco-environment. Finally, the paper maintains that the integration of region symbolic image is a long-term, complicated and systematic project which depends on the special symbolic image plan, a forward-looking, strategic and coordinated city plan.
