Abstract:With the rapid development in two decades, the impacts of the various Development Zones (DZs) on the development of their mother-cities (the cities in which the DZs are located) have become increasingly obvious and significant in many aspects, and have turned into an important promoting and driving mechanism of China's contemporary urban development. Therefore, an overall view and synthetic assessment of the impacts of the DZs on China's urban development has become necessary.
Taking 48 state-level Economic-Tech Development Zones and 53 state-level Hi-Tech Development Zones (i.e. two main categories of the New Special Development Zones in China) as the sample, from six different aspects-industrial production, urban spatial size, extroverted degree of economy, vigor of industrial growth, tax generating, and employment contribution, this paper analyzes the degree, characters, and patterns of the influences of DZs on the development of 65 relevant cities in China. The degrees of the influence of DZs on urban development in above six aspects are respectively calculated as indexes A, B, C, D, E, F in the Tab.1, and the index M in the table represents the synthetic average of these indexes. The results show that the degrees of the influences of DZs on urban development are generally higher in the eastern region of China (e specially coastal region) than that in the central or western region.
