Abstract:The classical world city theory presumes that all cities should follow a unitary route, predominated by transnational capital, to become a world city. As distinct national identity leads to various globalization routes, a critical opinion that the globalization mode should be diverse has received more and more concentration. Thus, this research uses descriptive statistic analysis and independent-sample T test to analyze the differences of process, pattern, scale, industry and dynamics between Chinese world cities and German ones listed in the World According to GaWC so as to better elaborate how distinct national identities lead to diverse globalization modes. The quantitative contrastive analyses conclude with five results. Firstly, although the globalization of Chinese cities launched behind German cities, the potential growth momentum is stronger than the latter. Secondly, Chinese world cities currently agglomerate in Jing-Jin-Ji, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta, the top three biggest urban clusters in China, presenting a tendency to disperse much broadly to midland and regions along the Yangtze River. Thirdly, the overall scale of population and gross domestic product in Chinese world cities has transcended German cities, but the average scale, which reflect economic efficiency exactly, still lag behind. Fourthly, the higher proportion of manufacture and construction industries but significantly lower percentages of finance and social service indicate that Chinese world cities still remain at the second circuit of capital accumulation. Fifthly, based on the above analyses and literature reviews, we summarize that the current globalization of Chinese cities is initially driven by preliminary processing and export, dominated by state government and promoted by transnational capital passively.
