Abstract:This article addresses GPN 2.0 in economic geography. There are significant differences between GPN 2.0 and GPN 1.0 in the explanation on regional development mechanisms. GPN 2.0 divides strategic couplings into 3 modes including structural coupling, functional coupling and indigenous coupling. For GPN 2.0, the coupling processing between GPNs and regions from a low-level to a high-level successfully is the driving force for regional development rather than the simple coupling in GPN 1.0 framework. And there is often a dominant mode of strategic couplings that can be used to characterize regional development trajectories. Thus, GPN 2.0 aims to analyze firm-level value capture trajectories from the vertical (organizational-) and horizontal (spatial-) dimensions in order to examine the coupling modes in different regions. 62 Koreaninvested firms sourcing from the automotive industry in Jiangsu province are selected to make empirical research on firm-level value capture trajectories using the GPN 2.0 analysis framework. And we make some comparison of coupling modes between North Jiangsu (Subei) and South Jiangsu (Sunan). There are some findings as follows:1) Subei is in the stage of ‘structural coupling’. That the GPN of KIA Motor touched down on the ground has shaped an automotive industry cluster in Subei. 2) Sunan is in the stage of ‘functional coupling’. 40 firms in Sunan are captured by multi-sourcing GPNs (both Korean motor and Non-Korean motor) outside the region.
