THE MEANING OF MASS TOURISTS' PRIMARY HOME FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF MOBILITY: EXPLORATORY RESEARCH BASED ON GROUNDED THEORY

Abstract：The enhancement of social mobility deepens the breadth and intensity of tourism activities, making the interaction between "home" and "way" more frequent and blurring the boundaries between them. The increase in tourism mobility also generates multiple "homes", including dwelling in the motion, the second home, the commercial home, etc. However, as an important form of "home", the primary home has not received enough attention in the realm of tourism mobility research. Based on the whole process of tourism mobility, this study discusses the meaning of the primary home of mass tourists, adopting the method of grounded theory. According to the data from 34 mass tourists, this paper identifies 8 categories and 4 main categories. The findings show that: 1) The primary home contains multiple emotional meanings such as familiarity, safety, belongingness, and responsibility. 2) Tourism mobility could promote the restoration and return of the primary home's original meaning, which is manifested as a strengthened sense of responsibility for the family and the society, as well as a deepened sense of attachment and belonging with the physical environment and people in the primary home. 3) The interaction between "home" (the primary home) and "way" (the journey) runs through the whole process of tourism flow, which influences the generation of the meaning of the primary home as well as the perception and behaviors of tourists during the journey.
