Abstract:With the development of new cultural geography, space and landscape are not limited to the "container" of culture, but the important force in the production of culture. The symbol in the landscape is material and visible, with its ideology, which means the result of long-term accumulation and action of the landscape in the context of the situation. Feelings, emotions, behavior, ideas, and so on, which hiding behind the representative unable to figurative, are also the important part of landscape but can't be read. These cannot be symbolic practice is rooted in historical, social, cultural and political background of the landscape, with a deep imprint of the geography, also due to the randomicity and subjectivity, practice can often more sensitive to reflect the changes in the landscape and its significance. So when we study landscape, we should focus on both symbolic representation and non-representational meaning. Western scholars have studied the system and theory of landscape. Through the review of theory and practice study, this study traces both representational and non-representational study of landscape, and we found that:1) Representational study mainly focuses on culture and power:on the one hand, the landscape can be regarded as the product of culture, and also the regeneration of culture in different periods. On the other hand, with the power game, landscape twists and turns and promote the evolution of the symbolic significance of power. 2) The landscape study of the non-representation perspective mainly focuses on the social changes of daily life, emotion, and other aspects of the social changes and their perceived diversity, complexity and instability.
