A STUDY ON THREAT FACTORS OF WORLD HERITAGES IN DANGER AND PROTECTION COUNTERMEASURE OF WORLD HERITAGES IN CHINA

Abstract:World Heritage in Danger refers to the heritages which are recorded on the World Heritage in Danger List. World Heritage in Danger List, established by World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, aims to protect and help the World Heritages which are under threat. At present, there are 38 World Heritages in Danger around the world. This Study will explore these criteria of selecting and the factors resulting in World Heritages being in severe danger, which would shed light on the management and protection of World Heritages in China. Based on the State of conservation of properties inscribed on the World Heritage List provide by the World Heritage Conference of past years, this paper would adopt quantitative approach to analyze those threatening factors causing World Heritages being danger. The finding shows that both the World Cultural Heritages and the World Natural Heritages mainly face the three threats, including armed conflicts, inefficient management and improper engineering construction. For the World Cultural Heritages, the threats also include the pressure of cities' development, irrational maintenance or reconstruction, etc. When it comes to the World Natural Heritages, the threatened factors contain illegal poaching and fishing, excessive deforestation, improper agricultural activities and grazing, etc. There are 43 World Heritages in China, and some of them have been evaluated by the State of conservation of properties inscribed on the World Heritage List for the last decade.
