摘要 地方性研究是人文地理学的重要领域,能够揭示地方的特质特性,从而实现对空间的理解。在后现代思潮影响下,基于地方理论的研究对象开始转向人们日常生活的空间,而质性研究方法尤其适用于这一揭示空间社会意义的研究。本文选取菜市场这一典型城市空间,尝试运用质性方法对其进行地方性的建构并分析其地方性形成机制。研究认为,菜市场的地方性可归为地方空间特性、地方时间特性、地方意义三个方面;地方性的形成机制是地方物质环境、活动者、历史文化和现代性相互作用的过程。研究通过深入理解承载市民生活的空间,希望促进城市空间地方性的传承与发展。

Abstract:Researches on placeness have been essential in human geography, which is effective in revealing the characters and spirit of a place. Promoted by post-modern philosophies, the topics of research have been turning to places in common life, which is facilitated by qualitative methods. We have focused our study on the food market, a typical kind of urban public place, explored the placeness of it and analyzed the formation mechanism. We choose Xinmin food market as the case and use qualitative methods, mainly through observation and in-depth interviews, to reveal the placeness of it. According to our study, placeness of the food market can be divided into three aspects:the spacial characteristics, the time characteristics, and the place meanings. The three dimensions are all abstracted from the broad range of interaction amongthe participants and the place. Firstly, the market is spatially characterized as chaotic but effective, low-end but necessary,integrated and diverse.Secondly, the time characteristics include time pace of a day, a week and a year. The time pace of the food market matches with the life pace of different customers. Thirdly, the place meanings fall into three categories:support forlife, social and emotional interacts as well as cultural and collective memories. The history and culture together with the collective memories of the market are mirrored and aroused in the market at present, and are passed down through the authentic market experiences. The formation of placeness of the food market incorporates the functions of physical settings,participants, history and culture, and modernity. All of them have interacted with the place andinfluenced mutually, resulting in the placeness of the food market today. Our study leads to understanding as well as protection and promotion of the placeness of food markets. This might also be applied to research of other heterogeneous urban spaces. Given that cities are losing characteristics in the rapid urbanization process, we believe the placeness of urban spaces deserve more attention and further research. Interpreting, caring for and recreating the placeness shall be the very way to revive traditional urban places as well as establish new ones.
