Abstract New rural construction and major function oriented zoning (MFOZ hereafter) are two important spatial regulation paths which are related to rural development and regional development respectively in China. The paper analyzes the connotation of regional major function and proposes its application in MFOZ, and illustrates the major functions and other functions among the three types of major functional zones involving spatial construction.Based on such analysis and with the aid of Figure-ground Theory, the study takes development elements which economic-development orientated functional zones put more emphasis on and which are carried by predominant land use zones divided in land-use planning as the Figure, and protection elements as the Ground relatively, while the patterns of ecology-protection types are just the reverse. Through logical deduction and induction, the paper summarizes seven dominant models and related requirements and objectives for new rural construction, that are placement model corresponding to development-optimized zone, polarization model corresponding to development-prioritized type and community model, renovation model, complementing model, demonstrating model and dissemination model corresponding to development restricted type.
