AN ANALYSIS OF RURAL SETTLEMENT EVOLUTION AND SOCIOECONOMIC AFFECT FACTORS IN NORTH CHINA PLAIN |

Abstract The North China Plain being a major grain producer is considered as an important agricultural region in China. Based on the classification of remote sensing images, and applying rank-size model, the Lorenz curve, landscape index, and a panel data regression model, the evolution characters of rural settlement and its main drivers were quantitatively examined from 2000 to 2015 in this paper. The main findings indicated that the spatial distribution of rural settlement showed regional differentiation and agglomeration characteristics, and the density in southern was high and in northern was low, the results also showed a local negative correlation with scale distribution, development of scale in heterogeneous states, and the size of rural settlements in higher rank developed faster. Furthermore, spatial evolution of landscape index of rural settlements indicates that the patch density increased area, the increased area of MPS, and MNN increased area were respectively, located in northern, southeast, and southern parts of the study area. Also, the patch's shape showed regular, however, the average patch fractal dimension tends to be complicated in middle and southern part. The PSSD decreased area was relatively centralized, while its increased area was relatively scattered. The increase in rural population and number of households were the main drivers of residential area expansion. The first industrial added value and urbanization rate also positively influenced the residential development. On the other hand, the rural active labor force, rural per capita net income and rural electricity consumption showed negative impact on the increase of resident areas. Key words: rural settlement
