Abstract Today camping is primarily a recreational activity and is an activity in which people live temporarily in the outdoors. One style of camping is to backpack and put up a tent. The other is Caravanning and Motor Caravanning which is a favorite pastime for families with young children, senior citizens, and those who do not want to backpack or put up a tent. Instead of hauling everything on their backs, Caravanning and Motor Caravanning enthusiasts carry their gear in a car or van. Foreign scholars have paid much more attention to camping. Scholars lay particular emphasis on the management of campground, the demand and satisfaction of campers and also the medical value of camping. The development of domestic camping tourism and campsites gradually attract much concern from the government, enterprises, scholars as well as tourists. On the basis of a review and analysis of the related research, the author systematically introduces the development and research of camping tourism in European and American countries and summarizes its characteristics in project construction and management. Natural, social conditions and camper's demand are considered as the very important factors that can influence the location of campground in European and American countries. The protection of the environment is the key element for sustainable development of camping. Then, the dissertation indicates that camping products show a combination of sightseeing and relaxation, personality and novelty, adventure and excitement as well as the diversified service. Finally, the author gives some constructive suggestions for the development of camping tourism in China in terms of plan construction and management.
