Abstract  Over the past 30 years, the spatial division of functions within firms is growing, forming transnational or cross-regional production chains and networks. More and more cities have been incorporated into the global production system, and the growth of corporate networks has become an important driving force for the growth and development of urban network. A large body of literature has emerged on the structure and dynamics of urban network through the lens of corporate networks. This paper provides a critical review of recent empirical studies, contributing to the literature by presenting a conceptual framework of urban network research. On the other hand, empirical research, mostly originating from the urban school, has empirically studied the organization of value chain across urban space, network externality and its multiplexity and heterogeneity, planning practices and governance structure. But on the whole, the research on urban network based on the corporate network is still in the initial stage, and four research issues have been relatively scarce, including multi-dimensional research on the structural characteristics, quantitative analysis of influencing factors and their mechanisms, construction of theoretical model to stimulate evolution process, and theoretical analysis of social welfare. Based on a synthesis of contributions to the special issue and the existing literature, the contours of a research agenda are sketched out on the rise of urban network through the lens of corporate networks. The urban network research framework includes two interrelated parts:theoretical research and applied research. The former focuses on the basic theoretical issues, such as the evolution process of spatial structure, mechanism of urban network development, construction of theoretical models, and analysis of social welfare, while the later is mainly to solve the technical problems, such as city-region planning, urban network governance, and policy design under networking circumstances.
