Abstract

The production of ethnic festival culture is an embodied, temporal, and spatial practice shaped by the interweaving of bodily rhythms and space-time rhythms among diverse actors. Taking the Miao New Year Festival in Xijiang Miao Village, Guizhou, this paper draws on spatial production and rhythm analysis, using participatory observation and semi-structured interviews to examine its synchronic practices and diachronic evolution. The findings show that the original festival culture was produced by villagers through the construction of conceptual space and time based on cyclical rhythms and local customs, forming connections among individuals, society, sacred/secular meanings, and everyday life. Under tourism, festival culture becomes a co-present field of multiple rhythms embedded in social relations, integrating villagers'spontaneous practices and reflecting embodied and space-time evolution. Its evolution is shaped by the projection of institutionalized temporal and spatial rhythms onto physical space, which fragments spatial practices and perceptions, weakens coordination between bodily and space-time rhythms, and reshapes cultural meanings.
