THE DEVELOPMENT AND TENDENCY OF THE RESEARCH ON UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER IN WESTERN COUNTRIES

Abstract  Technology, institution and culture are the most important issues in the process of building the systemic theory of economic geography. Relation, scale and adjustment are also the core of debating in the theory of new economic geography. Technology plays a much more important role at present than ever before. Therefore how the new technology creates and transfers is concerned by many researchers. Universities, which are in the process of reform, play an important role in national or regional technology innovation and transfer. University technology transfer becomes a hot issue which is discussed by scholars of management, economics and economic geography, as well as police makers in western countries. This paper makes a systematic overview of the statue quo and development trend of researches on university technology transfer in west countries. There are five aspects of researches on university technology transfer in western countries, including the mutual effect of academic commercialization on university and enterprise; discussion on university technology transfer centre/office/licensing; regional different of university technology transfer; quantitative research, modeling, and evaluation of university technology transfer; the relationship between university-industry linkage and high-tech enterprises/cluster. Based on comparison research of the domestic study and western ones, the authors contend that there are three possible aspects for domestic economic geographers to continue their researches about technology transfer, which are the analysis on the location of university technology transfer, mutual influence of university technology transfer and industrial clusters and hi-tech park, and the research on relation of government-university-enterprise, such as triple helix. Finally, the authors point out some existing problems in the study on university technology transfer in China.
