ON DAVID HARVEY'S ACADEMIC CONSTRUCTION OF MARTIN HEIDEGGER'S THOUGHTS ON “PLACE”

Abstract：In his "From space to place, and back again", an article reprinted in Justice, Nature and the Geography of Difference in 1996, David Harvey tried to academically construct Martin Heidegger's thought of the "place construction" process. Harvey employed several techniques of text construction such as recomposing the citations, reconstructing the materials selectively, replacing the topic, ignoring the obvious, and expressing ambiguously. This article explicates the details of his academic construction in a deconstruction way, by pointing out that, Harvey's hurry of construction of his own viewpoint led to his forgetting of the rigorous and credible bottom line for academic research. By pointing out Heidegger's importance to the space studies, Harvey brought this thinker's thought up again and set a new basis for future research. However, Harvey didn't treat Heidegger's thought on space very carefully. By leading the meaning of "recovery of dwelling" to "place construction", Harvey intentionally overemphasized the significance of "place" in Heidegger's thought and paradoxically supported his own thought on place construction. If we do not probe and clarify the optional elaboration and intended construction of Heidegger's thoughts on space and place, their enlightenment and contribution to related research of human geography will be severely hampered. In conclusion, in order to righteously make of the meditative thoughts of space and place provided by Heidegger and other philosophers, especially the phenomenologists, human geographers should ensure the prerequisite that they will respect the original works and try their best to avoid misreading before any application or criticism.
