Abstract：The transition towards a socialist market economy beginning from 1978 has created a great migration in China. Scholars inside and outside have completed a lot of studies on the migration in China. This review summarizes and assesses the growing researches about migration in China during 1990s. The main purpose of this paper is to point out the achievement and shortcoming of the researches in this area, and to suggest the directions for future research. The paper consists of three parts as follows:
First, the paper summarizes the characteristics of the researches about migration in China during 1990s. It points out that researches about migration in China begin in early 1980s.
Second, this paper summarizes the main research areas and progresses in researches about migration in China during 1990s,including:(1) Researches and progresses about the socio-economic characteristics of migrants in China, such as age characteristic, sex characteristic, education characteristic and so on;(2) Researches about the spatial patterns of migration flow, most of researches have stated that the migration flow in China were from east to west China before 1980, but the main migration flow was from west to east after 1980;(3) Researches about the socio economic, natural, cultural, political and geography determinants of migration in China;(4) Researches about the positive and negative impacts of migration, including socio economic, cultural and environmental impacts in both rural areas and cities;(5) Researches about public policy implications of migration in China, including public policies at local, regional and national levels;(6) Researches about some theoretical and methodological issues in this research area. Many Western theories, such as structure theory, push-pull theory and so on, have been used, and research methods, such as mathematical models, questionnaire, and interview, were widely used in the researches.
In the last section, the paper points out some theoretical and methodological shortcomings in the research and suggest the directions for future research. Future researches could be focused on the relationship between migration and development in West China, and the relationship between migration and sustainable development in China.
