Abstract:Currently, the rapid modernization and urbanization in China deeply and sharply reshape the interrelationship between rural and urban, promoting a huge wave of demolition and reconstruction of urban villages. In contrast to existing knowledge of urban village which heavily base on economic and urban planning perspectives, this paper attempts to interrogate the reconstruction of placeness of urban village with the perspectives of culture and place. On the basis of ‘place’, this paper conducts on the construction of placeness, concluding that landscape, text, symbol and perception (subjective feelings) constructed placeness. As mentioned above, this paper deconstructs placeness into four main dimensions. Landscape is the physical presentation of placeness, which reflects interrelationships between human and natural environment. Additionally, text and symbol contribute memory, description and imagination of a place, which constructs the uniqueness of a place. Last but not the least, local people's subjective perception of place also plays an important role in construction placeness. Fashioning these four dimensions as theoretical framework, this paper analyze the chronological development of the placeness of a specific place. Taking Liede village as example, which is the so-called most successful case of urban village redevelopment project, we found that the construction of placeness is embedded on the developmental context of a place, which is going through an ongoing process. Interview and field research are taken as research methods to collect first hand data. Additionally, local chronicles and official documents are also collected. Research objects includes local villagers, government and property developers. To conclude, placeness is under an on-going process of construction.
