Abstract:Along with the reform and opening to the outside world, it is mostly susgested that the central cities along the eastern coast and the Yungtze River should develop in the direction of international cities. How many types do international cities fall into? What spatial features do they as sume? These fundamental theoretical questions arise from overall urban planning. This paper takes Shenzhen City as an example and discusses its developmental trend and orentational layout,by analysing the basic features of internationl cities.
1. Basic spatial features of international cities
1.1 Urban distribution and allocations clearly conforms to overseas transport systems
1.2 The international city is attached to the city group (1000km2)
1.3 The international city has a CBD (10km2)
1.4 The infrastructure and welfare facilities of an international city are complate and well-developed
1.5 The tertiary industry corers an overwhelming proportion of urban land (70%)
1.6 Highly-open economic policies are esential to the existence of an international city
1.7 The international city occupied a prominent position in the politico-econonic circle of the world
2.The advantages of Shenzhen City in developing into an international city
2.1 The two major advantage of Shenzheng during its early development period have expe rienced a conversion
2.2 The city has much potentiality for further development
2.3 The population of Shenzhen City comes from differnt cultures-its opening to the out side world
3.Existing problems in Shenzhen City (Shenzhen has many structural problems)
3.1 Population poses a serious problem (grow at a rate of 26.1%)
3.2 Land resources are scarce (no land will be arailable in 15 year's time, 1/4 citizens have stadard houses)
3.3 Shenzhen's evident disavantages of layout
4.Shenzhen's objective in layout readjustment
4.1 Optimize the urban system
4.2 An international port metropolis with multiple fuctions
4.3 The industrial zones should extend eastwards and westwards
4.4 The North Station Should be transformed into a passenger transport station
4.5 Build a technical and industrial zone
